ON SNOW

Today was my second ski up at Powerline Pass, and it is winter up there for sure!  It was a wonderful workout, and I felt like I got totally comfortable with kicking a ski that doesn’t have wheels.  Skiing on the glacier in the summer helps to keep a feel for snow, but it has been over a month doing dryland training now so it is still a bit of a transition.  It’s also kind of a balance workout because there are not packed tracks so even though it’s skied in pretty good, the surface is kind of uneven.  But, it’s still skiing and it still rocks!!
According to Mark Iverson, he has counted 50 in this valley in the fall before so today wasn’t even a big day, but for the record, I saw 12 moose in one area, and at least 2 more scattered around for a grand total of around 14+ :

It’s mating season for moose, and I have seen two pairs of bulls fighting already this year.  That was from a fairly safe distance of course, but there are usually one or two moose that decide to make life difficult for you and block the trail.  This morning was fortunate, because although we did go within 25 feet of a female she wasn’t worried about us at all so there were no slowdowns.
My workout buddy in the subject photo is Celia Haering.  She is one of our APU juniors, and is one strong J2.  Her rollerboard and double pole strength probably have J2 girls (and boys) around the country shaking in their boots even though they don’t know it yet.  I have been going to more of her practices lately, and have been really impressed with how dedicated she is.  She is so excited about skiing! It’s been really fun to be around her enthusiasm (even though she keeps it toned down with her dry sense of humor, I could tell she was really amped to get on snow this morning).  And one thing that I know for certain is that she is training a whole lot more than I was when I was 15 and a sophomore in high school.  So look out world, here comes Celia Haering.  It will be really cool to see what she can do in the high school and JO fields this winter!
